Bank History

On December 21, 1923, Mifflin County Building and Loan Association came into existence with $2,000,000 in Capital. Nineteen Directors were named on the Incorporation documents.

Two important events in the history of our Bank occurred in 1956. Mifflin County Building and Loan Association became Mifflin County Savings and Loan Association on January 20, 1956. This reflected the overall mission of the Institution to be a local savings depository for the purpose of local housing lending. Secondly, insurance of depositor's savings accounts was obtained.

An office was opened in Belleville on October 6, 1971 to better serve our customers in that area. To further expand its services to another neighboring community, the Mount Union Building and Loan Association was purchased on July 3, 1972.

Revitalization of the Lewistown business district saw many building changes take place. Mifflin County Savings and Loan Association had outgrown its current office space and built a new office building which was opened for business on November 12, 1976.

Of significant importance in the history of our Institution was the conversion from Mifflin County Savings and Loan Association (a State Mutual Savings and Loan Association) to Mifflin County Savings Bank (a State Mutual Savings Bank). This conversion was finalized on November 2, 1993.

On December 6, 1996, we opened a Branch Office at 9 North Brown Street, McClure. Much planning, research, and a "town meeting" was used to inform the residents of the area of our plans and to get some ideas as to their financial needs. That same month we relocated our Mount Union Office into a new building at 23-27 East Shirley Street. The year 2001 brought another change to the Institution. A new Loan Operations Center was opened at 101 East Market Street, Lewistown.

These are some of the highlights that have occurred in our history. We are proud of the strong conservative leadership that has made MCS Bank (Mifflin County Savings Bank) a vital part of the financial system in the communities that we serve.
